In blackjack games, which have several variants of play, there are many sets of rules and regulations specific to the variation of game under play. So, it is always advisable that the players have a thorough knowledge of the rules of their chosen variation of blackjack game. Sometimes, there may be legal restrictions and forms to be observed before a blackjack game can be played in a casino house. Since not all rules of the game are made publicly posted, players should ask about the rules of the game before play starts or according to the situation in the game. Interestingly there are over 100 variations of play in blackjack games.

One such variation is the number of card decks employed in the game. It ahs been seen that lesser number of card decks is favorable for the players who play their game according to the basic strategy. Another important circumstances in a blackjack game that may arise out of the late surrender rule is when a player gets slight advantage in cases when the hand values are 15 against 10 or 16 against ace or 16 against 10, with the latter case being a situation where late surrendering and receiving half of one’s original wager is invariably advantageous to the gambler.

An important variation in blackjack game rules happen when the normal 3:2 winning odds are not offered as payout but when a blackjack hand is given 6:5 odds or in some cases, 1-to-1 odds. This variation when used is done to enhance house edge and in no way benefits the players. Another unfavorable rule in a blackjack game for players but advantageous to casino houses is when instead of a tie or push, the dealer gets to win the hand of play even when both he and a player has the same blackjack hand. An advantageous rule variation that favors the player is the 5-card charlie which returns the player as a winner if he manages to draw five cards and doesn’t get busted.

Splitting pairs decision is offered to blackjack players who have received very high valued pair of cards and has neither the chance to win nor the chance to draw for that would mean getting busted. If the option is exercised judiciously, along with such options such as re-split and double after split, this choice of actions can be exploited by experienced and skilled blackjack players to perfection and to the bets of their advantage.

However, rookie players may end up splitting pairs too enthusiastically without pausing to reflect if the hand they held is already a winning one or not. If a player has a hand consisting of two ten-valued cards, that is, a combination of 10, jack, king or queen cards in any permutation, he already has a hand value of 20 which is an extremely advantageous hand and unless the dealer has a blackjack hand, the player is actually holding a winning hand. So, instead of foolishly splitting such a hand, it is advisable that the player sticks to his hand.

Another significant decision a player is called to make when he is dealt a pair of aces, whether to split his pair or keep his hand and hit again (since now one of his ace becomes 11 and another becomes 1 so as to avoid busting). If the player decides to split his aces, it is viewed as very strong play and casinos normally restrict the player from drawing more than on extra card for each ace hand. Interestingly, now if a player draws a ten-valued card on one of his ace hands, it is not considered a blackjack but simply as a hand with value of 21S, the player cannot win the 3:2 winning odds. Some casino houses allow players to re-split if he hits another ace. However, sometimes casinos that allow re-splitting for other paired cards won’t permit it for ace hands. It is still advisable to always split aces since otherwise one of the aces will get undervalued at 1 and give the player no advantage of play.

A very important choice of action for he blackjack player is the decision to split pairs. It is a potentially very advantageous strategy of play for gamblers when their find their hands become clumsy for being dealt a pair of cards with matching value. The concept of splitting pairs means that the player can now split the two cards and form two separate hands of play and continue with the game independently. So, if a player gets a pair of 9 cards as his first two cards, his hand strength is equal to 18 which is most likely not a winning hand but stands the possibility of going busted if he draws again. So by splitting the pair, the player can turn the disadvantage to his favor and form to hands with a 9 card each and both the hands can be played against the dealer without reference to one another, as if not one but two players are playing.

The form of action a player has to follow if he decides to split the pair in his hand resembles double down to some extent. So, if a hand-held game is under progress, the player throws down his cards on the game table with their faces turned up. In both types of blackjack game, the player is required to place an additional wager in the betting circle, since he proposes to play two hands simultaneously instead of one. However, unlike doubling down where the payer can bet any amount with the maximum being equal to his original bet, in case of splitting pairs, the player must match his original bet. So, if the player had betted $25 originally, he must bet another $25 in the betting circle if he wants to split his pairs. Once this is done, the dealer formally splits the pair of cards and treats them as separate hands in the game.

While the decisions like surrender, hit or stand are common ones and most basic to the game, there are some options such as doubling down, which if availed by the player, can turn out to be a rewarding proposition.

A player can only opt to double down once he has received his two cards and before drawing the optional third card. Choosing to double down means that the player can double his bet and receive another card to his hand. A case in point would be when a player has a hand value of 10 with a 4 and a 6 card and the dealer’s up card is a 5. The player has an advantage and may possibly win the hand, so by doubling down he increases the bet that he stands the chance to win.

When the game is being played with initial dealing of two hole cards, the player indicates his intention to double down by throwing his cards in front of his bet with their faces up. In both this and the ‘shoe’ game, the extra wager is added in the betting circle in a separate stack alongside the original bet. This is followed by the dealing of the third card and in case of the face down game the dealer may place the card beneath the bet with its face turned downwards so that it may be revealed later.

The maximum amount of the additional wager is equal to the original wager and the player can choose to stake any bet size. So, if he had betted $20 in the first place, he may bet any amount now up to $20. Significantly, while one has the chance to draw any number of additional cards in a normal game situation (mostly only the third card is drawn, if any) the player who doubles down is bound to draw only the third card and no more. However, it is advisable to double the bet to full size if the player is confident that double down is the right choice of play.

If a ‘shoe’ version of blackjack game is in progress where the players are not allowed to handle their cards and the face up cards they are dealt remain on the game table at all times, game decisions like hitting or standing must be indicated to the dealer via some specific hand movements. This calls for the player to know all the hand gestures and their meaning properly before going in the game so that he may not make any gesture by mistake and end up with a choice of action that he did not intend.

So, the player must tap behind his two cards to communicate his wish to hit. Now if on receiving the third card he gets busted with his hand value exceeding 21, the dealer will confiscate his bet amount and take away his cards from the game table. In case the player wants to stand and lock his hand value, he should only wave his ands in a horizontal fashion over his cards.

In the more common face down games, where the initial two cards the player receives are hole cards, he handles the cards and takes them in his hand. If he wants to hit he needs to scrape the cards against the game table that would indicate his wish to draw the third card. By the rules, the player cannot touch the third card dealt face up. If his hand has busted, he is required to reveal his hole cards by putting them on the table for the dealer to see, who would then collect the bet and discard his hand. Now, if the player wants to stand he must tuck his hole cards beneath the chips he had betted to show he wants no more card. But by the rules, he cannot touch the chips he has betted and put inside the circle. So he cannot pick up the bet, put the cards beneath and place the bet on them. He can only slide the cards dexterously under the chips without upsetting the stack.
